Ledger names and GST ledgers for the Tally import
Tally matches entries by ledger name, letter for letter. If your company calls its sales ledger "Sales @18%", the import must use that name, or Tally creates a second ledger.
The ledgers used
| Entry | Name we use (change it if yours differs) | Group in Tally |
|---|---|---|
| Sales, sales returns | Sales | Sales Accounts |
| Purchases, purchase returns | Purchase | Purchase Accounts |
| GST on sales | Output CGST, Output SGST, Output UTGST, Output IGST | Duties & Taxes |
| GST on purchases | Input CGST, Input SGST, Input IGST | Duties & Taxes |
| Reverse-charge GST you pay | GST Payable on Reverse Charge | Duties & Taxes |
| Round off | Round Off | Indirect Expenses |
| Cash, bank | Cash, Bank | Cash-in-Hand, Bank Accounts |
| TDS | TDS Receivable, TDS Payable | Loans & Advances (Asset), Duties & Taxes |
| Expenses | The expense head you used (Rent, Electricity…) | Indirect Expenses |
| Customers, suppliers | Their names as saved | Sundry Debtors, Sundry Creditors |
Matching your Tally
- In TallyPrime, open Chart of Accounts › Ledgers and note the exact names of your sales, GST, cash and bank ledgers.
- On this site, open Ledger names in your Tally and type them. Empty boxes use our names.
- Leave Don't create Cash and Bank ledgers ticked if they already exist in Tally (they almost always do).
- When importing the ledgers file, choose Ignore duplicates so your own ledgers stay as they are.
GST details of parties
The ledgers file carries each party's address, PIN, state and phone, but not the GSTIN: TallyPrime's published import samples don't show the GST registration fields, and we only use what Tally documents. After importing, alter each new party ledger in Tally and fill in its GST registration details, or ask your accountant to. GST ledgers also need their tax type (Central, State, Integrated) set once in Tally.
Worked example
Your Tally has "Sales GST" and "HDFC Bank". Type Sales GST under Sales and HDFC Bank under Bank. A receipt of ₹20,000 by NEFT from Shree Traders then imports as HDFC Bank Dr ₹20,000, Shree Traders Cr ₹20,000 Agst Ref INV/26-27/101.
